"As big beauty companies race to come up with ever more futuristic-sounding innovations (stem-cell technology? DNA makeup? wipe-on wrinkle relaxers?), it’s nice to know that some brands are keeping things simple.

Great-looking skin requires neither obsession nor fortune. And while research shows that with maturity, we are more likely to admire ourselves more for our competence and less for our attractiveness to others, no one is immune to the spirit-lifting buzz of a compliment.

Wanting to look good is not only reasonable, it’s healthy. Enter Agnes & Me. The brainchild of former nurse Deirdre Doran, the boutique natural range is made by hand in Auckland’s Titirangi and sold online.

The products smell great, nourish the skin and lift the senses. Try Agnes & Me Face Cream ($52), a well-formulated moisturiser that is simple but hardly basic."

"I have…. started using the Agnes & Me Face Cream, made in Auckland by a very passionate woman who totally walks the walk when it comes to waste-free beauty products. The face moisturiser comes in a recyclable glass jar and smells beautiful, like rose and almond oil."

"Keep an eye out for Agnes & Me's Blam Blam Balm, a product in the same all-purpose family as Trilogy's Everything Balm, Elizabeth Arden's Eight-Hour Cream and the manuka wonder-worker, Manuka RX Ointment. Blam Blam Balm combines plant ingredients in one multi-rescue formula. Rosehip, safflower, jojoba, hemp seed, shea butter ... is there any beneficial ingredient this all-natural salve doesn't contain? Use it on nails, skin, lips and hair. It is also an excellent oil-based cleanser. And it's Kiwi-made; created in a home studio in Titirangi, Auckland, by former nurse Deidre Doran."

The Spinoff December 2020

The Spinoff

Agnes & Me creates waste-free, cruelty-free skincare created from the lush bushes of Titirangi. The name comes from the creator’s Northern Irish mother, and there’s a touching backstory to read on their website. They have a modest range of skincare options available, but I’m a sucker for a gift pack (if you couldn’t already tell), and their Christmas Special Body + Face oil combo delivers.
